Label Spotlight #029 - Footjob

Phonk D’s Footjob is a label born and bred in Germany that’s cheeky by name, cheekier by nature. Fresh fun-fueled records for the weekend since 2014 and has played host to the likes of Sascha Ciminiera, Pallaspeople, Glance alongside Phonk D’s own productions. We caught up with Phonk D to discuss the label so far..

Could you give us a little bit of background on you, the label, and what your influences were and still are?

To understand Phonk D’s musical universe, you have to take a journey back in time for some years. After distributing his first genre-crossing mixtapes in the schoolyard, he was drawn to electronic music in the 90s. Night after night the Darmstadt resident observed the DJs at Frankfurt’s legendary clubs Dorian Gray and Omen spending all his money on records. Thus, his DJ-career and enthusiasm for House and Techno kicked off with his first gig in 1997.

Aside from DJing, he started to organize his own parties and worked at a local record store. The deeper his interest in DJ-techniques grew, the more he developed a passion for Hip Hop. For the next couple of years the electronic music took a backseat. Instead, Phonk D expanded his personal collection with disco- and funk-records and sold his own mix tapes in the Rhein-Main-area as well as establishing the producer-collective Kollege Schnürschnuh together with his musical partner Iron. In due course, they took credit for several albums and EPs for rappers like Mädness and Döll and Phonk D supported various artists at concerts and festivals as a backing DJ.

While Phonk D enjoys expanding his musical tastes, an old flame never dies and after a long-lasting period in urban music, he went back to his roots, falling in love with electronic music again. He founded his own label “Footjob”, which he has been running since 2014 and releases tunes of other artists besides his own productions.

The sound of Footjob is somewhere between deep, disco and classic house without being too attached to a genre and finds the approval of well-known scene-heads. As a resident DJ at Galerie Kurzweil and with his event series “Diggin’ In The Crates“ at the Darmstadt-based Weststadtcafé he follows his passion for pushing tunes appealing to him since he took his first steps into the world of music.

What have been your favourite releases from the label over the years?

I like every release so far, but if I have to pick a favourite I would choose the third release of Glance, Sascha Ciminiera & myself. Having said that, I prefer the other producer’s stuff to mine, but the sales figures speak for me :)

Tell us a bit about what’s coming up for the label

Lukas Lehmann, a newcomer from footjob’s hometown Darmstadt, Solo EP from the legendary Hans Nießwandt (Whirlpool Productions), Sampler Various Artists, & sooner or later a new Phonk D Solo EP

What has been Your best moment working at “Footjob” or best project to work on to date?

We had a lot of great moments in the studio working together on tracks and realising that something cool is happening. Sometimes we started dancing to the stuff we were working on, which turned out to be a good indicator that we have a great thing going. Later on, we also really enjoyed playing the tunes in the club just to see that it was worth all the effort we put in and that it works in such a situation. The icing on the cake was, when artists we dig ourselves started playing our tunes in their live sets – we felt like we did everything right.

If you could have signed any record in the world for the label, what would it have been and why?

That’s a very difficult question, but I think I would choose anything from Romanthony’s mid 90’s releases. For me he was one of the best house producers of all time. nobody brings more love and pain to his productions, the arrangement and the harmony changes etc. It still impresses me today, timeless classics!

What do you look for when signing a record for “Footjob”? Any tips for budding producers looking to get signed to the label?

As you probably know by now, I mostly release my own stuff or the music from people I already know, but generally speaking I like music build with love, happiness and positive vibes, no monotone or dark moods, and I prefer sample tunes with funky grooves and heavy drums.
