Introducing Quartet Series Talent: Tell
We heard the groove on the title cut from Quartet series’s latest release ‘Faster Than Light’ and dug deeper to find the deliciously deep B side ‘Vamos a La Playa’ and quite simply that was that. We HAD to find out more about the brains behind this one.. This week we’re introducing Paris-based artist Tell, who gives us the down low on his career so far and lets us in on some secrets about the nightlife scene in Paris..
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your music, who or what are your main influences?
Yo, I live in Paris, and I’m into a lot of genres in my production. I started as a drummer, playing in bands etc… So I feel like, what I love is jamming and this always brings me to some genre or another, even though most of the time it ends up being housy lol. I’m also a sample lover, I love to chop them and add them with guitars and synths. That’s it basically. Influences would be, Mac Demarco, MNDSGN, Brawther, and many others like Project Pablo, Mad Rey etc..
How did you first get into DJing / production? When did you know you wanted to be a DJ / artist?
When I was 18, a friend of mine showed me a bit on ableton, so naturally I enjoyed it because I wasn’t only playing the drums, I had to compose everything, and it was super funny for me. Djing came before that, because I was already into digging vinyl.
Tell us about your local scene and what makes it special.
There are some crews, like DKO, La mamies, Crakie rec, Camion Bazar that helped me discover the real things about the clubbing scene when I moved to Paris 3 years ago. Almost all of them are my friends now, everybody knows each other and the stage is always evolving, lots of people doing house producing with the lo-fi movement rising etc… I think it’s an awesome period to play house music with a warm crowd like that, 10 years ago the club scene was way different in Paris!!
Talk to us about your upcoming / current release “Faster Than Light”
This is my second Ep and it’s out now on Quartet Series. I’m really proud about this one! It’s my club side, more summerful than the Skylax one before. All tracks need to be played in a set, one of them is named “Vamos A La Playa” and it can be listened u know where ahah! Mauritz came to me after my first vinyl release on BXC 1 year ago and we did this Ep. He saw the potential of my club tool tracks after “Hope Springs Eternal” on the 3rd various in Quartet Series. Anyway, it’s really good to work with him, Quartet is a really important label for me, it’s like my dutch family eheh.. I hope to continue working with him.
What’s your greatest career high to date?
I think my best achievement was playing Rex club for the first time. This place has got so much history, it felt really good to play those decks.
This is an introducing piece, tell us something everyone knows and something no-one knows.
I’m a cool guy, everyone knows that hahaha and I’m super good at playing table soccer and ping-pong, no one can beat me and I’m sure you didn’t know that!
If you could have made any dance record in history, what would it be and why?
Mr fingers – “Can You Feel It” such a great classic, but still super actual to me.
