Mark Knight - 'How I DJ'

Between taking his world renown Toolroom imprint back to it’s very foundation with the launch of #RESET, capping of a stellar Toolroom Knights summer residency at BOOOM Ibiza and with Toolroom Live 01 out on Traxsource, we thought it would be the perfect time to get with the Toolroom Records head honcho to tell us a bit about his personal preferences when he plays out in the clubs. This is how Mark Knight DJ’s.

Are you more of a DJ or Producer — or one in the same?

One begets the other, so the same.

Describe what makes a good DJ in three or four (or maybe 5 ?) words.

Ability to read a crowd.

Who or what inspired you to become a DJ?

Masters at Work.

When did you know you wanted to DJ?

There was never one moment it just sort of crept up on me.

Who to you is/was “The Dj’s DJ”.

Louie Vega.

Describe your main and preferred DJ set-up.

4 CDJ’s & DJM 900.

Do you use a lap-top? If so, what platform/program?

No.

Any special, unique, crazy things on your rider?

No just need a good sound system and the right equipment to rock a crowd I don’t need cakes or props!

Beverage of choice while playing?

It’s a bit ponsy but Champagne.

Favorite country/club/city to play? (feel free to name one of each)

Yalta Sophia.

Do you Sync, What’s your view on this? Has it leveled the playing field for the better or worse?

I don’t but in all fairness Djing has well and truly evolved from its primary concern of beat matching, to a degree its sort of irrelevant now. What is important is how you rock a crowd and you tell your own musical story. That bit is still the most important part and there is no software to help you have good choice and musical knowledge.

Any DJ Controllers?

No.

Favorite or “go-to” EFXs while playing?

The built in EFX in the DJM 900 do the trick for me.

Read the crowd or just pound it out?

If you don’t read the crowd you might as well book an iPod.

Big festivals or intimate clubs? Why?

Intimate clubs//I like long journeys not whacking people over the head.

Ever miss the CDs or Vinyl days?

Nope …It’s a bit like saying do you miss your analogue mobile phone.

How do you maintain your music library?

Play lists in Itunes.

Wavs OR MP3 — WHY? Is their a difference?

That’s an emperor’s new clothes question 320’s sound identical to WAV’s on loud club system. The question would be better directed to club owners… Shit sound system or invest a good one ?

Any Tips for aspiring Young DJs?

Do YOUR own thing don’t try to be or imitate someone else does nothing for you or our scene.

Do you do any of the Obligatory DJ Poses?

Of course, the standard MK slightly pouty / moody shot available in both colour and black and white.

How do combat the “Everyone is a DJ” mentality?

By being better than them…
