1) Firstly, thank you both for taking the time out to chat with us. Tell us where you both are and how you’re feeling right now.
Hello there, you are so welcome. Right now I`m enjoying the nice fall here in Oslo Norway, excited over the new release and all the support it’s getting, and landing after a busy summer of Ibiza, London and touring Norway.
I am in London, where I’m based. Recently back from a week in Ibiza, where I played five shows. It was an amazing week, and all great gigs, and feeling very inspired musically.
2) John, tell us in your words a little bit about how the “Realize” release on Love Inc. came to be. How did you get to work together with Juliet?
Well, first of all I have to say it is one of my favorite releases, and I´m am very excited for it. I had spent a couple of days putting together a new sound pallet, and listening to that really really got my inspiration bubbling, the groove quickly fell into place, so did the arrangement. Listening to it I was quite happy but it was missing something, a hook, something that made the track stand out, so I fired it over to my manager Pete Gooding for some thoughts, and he quickly replied “I have the perfect vocalist for you, and it’s just what’s missing here”. So he sent me a recording from Juliet that was just what the track needed. After putting that and doing a bit of some rearranging, it was no question, it was us coming together for “Realize”.
3) The music industry is in constant change. What keeps you both motivated?
Having that belief in your own sound and evolving that. And discovering that the way you evolve is in sync with the changes in in the industry. And of course when you get the feedback like we have on this release, makes your confidence grow even more on what you are doing, and gives you that push you need.
Forever bettering myself, my sound, and my performance. Its endless with the music industry, which makes it exciting!
4) What artists have influenced both of your sounds?
A little mixture of new and old, from the new side – Hot Since 82, Pirupa, Supernova and a dash of Patrick Topping lately, from the classic side – Todd Terry and Blaze, they really represent the true spirit of house.
Currently influencing my sound are guys like: Dusky, Hot Since 82, Cajmere, Doorly, Hector Couto, Josh Butler, Ida Engberg, German Brigante …the list goes on!
5) Tell us some interesting facts we may not know about you both.
I’m up at 7 am in the morning when I haven`t been DJing the night before. I find the most relaxing music is Frank Sinatra. The hardest part for me in making a record is the intro. I twist my feet in the DJ box when I play, makes me feel the rhythm even better. The more I interact with people when I play the more buzz I get.
I actually love the touring lifestyle, and flying. I get a buzz from it, and the excitement of playing to new crowds, and seeing their reaction. I also love climbing on speaker boxes if I’m out playing ha! I think it’s the sense of getting up high and right into the music!
6) Any stories about the recording process you can share with us?
I would have to say the way we worked the track with back and forth getting the vocal right, we didn’t do it in one take. Thankful for the internet and to be able to work remotely and make it come together.
I actually recorded the vocals in my own studio in London, and sent them over to John. So it’s great to see something come together – even when you are in separate cities, and working back and forth.
7) What would be your short list of dream collaborations?
Hot Since 82 for sure, Josh Butler, Patrick Topping, Jay Lumen and I would also say The Shapeshifters. And you know what, maybe Kenny Dope and Little Louie Vega, that would be something.
I am still very chuffed about my collab with Green Velvet (aka Cajmere), who has been a massive influence and encouragement to me. If I could work with any of the people I mentioned who have currently influenced me, this would definitely be an amazing achievement.
8) What’s next for you?
It’s gonna be a busy fall and winter, both DJ wise and production wise. The gig schedule is filled out the year here in Norway, and 2015 is starting to come in, we are also looking at some tour dates with Seamless whom I’ve done one compilation for this summer and had several single releases on. I also have more new releases in the pipeline for them and some other interesting labels. Some you are gonna hear me loud and proud in the future.
I am off playing in Sri Lanka this weekend, and then I have two shows at ADE, which I am really excited for! Then getting back to London and back in the studio, as I will no doubt be buzzing from that, and full of new ideas. I am also working on a compilation for Beatdown, which will be out before the end of the year, so putting that together now.
