Tom Lonsborough (Manchester Midi School) - AIFF Has Life To It
Established 1996, Manchester MIDI School has been providing cutting-edge training for those wanting to flourish in the music and multimedia industries. One of the Course Leaders, Tom Lonsborough, is a Certified Ableton Tutor and Online Learning Specialist who is constantly developing new courses for MMS. With many releases of his own across several labels, his knowledge and experience is nothing but impressive. He took some time to explain the benefits of uncompressed formats such as AIFF.
“Very simply, the best quality MP3 has a bit rate of 320kbps, whereas ‘CD quality’ uncompressed formats such as AIFF have a bit rate of 1411kbps – 4 1/2 times more information than an MP3. The figures speak for themselves. Information vital to the vibrance of a track is thrown away when a file is compressed to MP3 format. Uncompressed audio has a life to it that the MP3 generation have been starved of for convenience purposes. Storage limitations are no longer as much of an issue, therefore there’s no excuse to not listen to uncompressed audio formats and hear music as the artist intended you to.”
