Diggin' Deeper with Steve Bug & Dessous
Uber-producer Steve Bug and his deep house label Dessous are well known amongst the house music community for turning out release after release of stellar underground goodness. So when we heard that Dessous were putting out ‘The Deeper Remixes’, a compilation of Steve’s remixes from their back catalog, we literally couldn’t wait to get our hands on it.
Kicking off with Steve’s phenomenal remake of Chez Damier’s ‘Can You Feel It’ – a near-perfect blend of New York heat and European glacial coolness – ‘The Deeper Remixes’ features twelve tracks of house and tech, where deep house legends like Damier and Robert Owens rub shoulders with techno royalty like Laurent Garnier and nu-schoolers like Manuel Tur and Scope. Dessous releases regularly grace the playlists of DJs as diverse as John Digweed, Shur-I-Kan, M.A.N.D.Y., Dirt Crew and Audiojack and a brief listen to this compilation will tell you exactly why. From the jazz-esque chords of Lovebirds ‘The Rain’, to the relentless cow-bell laden deep groove of Simon Baker’s ‘Grey Area’ and the simply huge Discowboys ‘At Midnight’, every track showcases Steve’s characteristic sound, a mouth-watering concoction that melds elements of deep house and techno into his own unique and highly successful hybrid.
There are plenty of vocal tracks included as well, like the fantastically moody ‘Drift’ by YOUAND:THEMACHINES, Ron Allen/Affrica’s sexy ‘Wordz’ and Robert Owen’s sublime ‘Rise’. Also included is Steve’s re-work of his own collaboration with Mr V, the spoken word epic ‘The Long Run’, which perhaps epitomises the Dessous sound: super-deep house with killer spoken word vocals on top, combining to produce music that is both underground and also accessible. The compilation finishes up with Steve’s emotive take on Francis Harris’s ‘Pensum’, a beautiful piano-laden slice of melancholia and a fitting after-hours end to a truly solid collection of tracks.
This is deep tech house with true emotion and longevity, music that will last long past its release date. In an era of disposable trends and even more disposable artists, Steve stands rock-solid, a dependable presence, consistently turning out timeless product.
Dessous ‘The Deeper Remixes’ then, is a genuine treat for both DJs and home listeners: a feast of top quality artists, peerless production values and irresistible dance floor grooves packed full of blissful chords, flawless beats, tantalising breaks and cavernous bass lines. Don’t sleep on this one!
