Inside The Track with Finest Wear
Cenzo Scoglio aka Finest Wear brings his warm, deep house flavour back to Nordic Trax this month for yet another scorching release. The Londoner’s ‘Things We Do’ is already gathering huge support in the scene from the likes of Jamie Jones, Danny Tenaglia, Laurent Garnier, Tensnake, Gene Farris and many more.. To celebrate, we go ‘Inside the Track’ with Scoglio as he breaks down what makes this release so special.
Congratulations on your ‘Things We Do’ release via Nordic Trax. How is it being received in your sets? & How are other club DJs responding to the release?
Thanks so much, It has been getting some great reactions in the clubs and it’s nice to see the crowd feeling something I have created. Both my debut on Nordic Trax and this release have received some pretty massive support. As a producer it’s an honor to see such a diverse range of DJs supporting this EP, including the likes of Tensnake, Josh Wink, Danny Tenaglia, Laurent Garnier, Franck Roger, Radio Slave, Jamie Jones, Mark Farina, Clive Henry, Fish Go Deep and many more. Some serious legends in there!
Tell us more about the track ‘Things We Do’. What was the main inspiration behind it and what prompted the musical direction on this?
I have been recently recording my mid-to-late ‘90s vinyl collection to digital format to use for my sets and while listening to them I had the idea to do my own take on the late ‘90s US Garage vibe, as I have been a massive fan over the years. I am a sucker for real smooth pads ‘n synth stabs and chunky bass lines and a solid groove, so that’s how I worked this track.
Production wise, what is it about the ‘Things We Do’ that makes it work?
Well I feel that I have the right balance with this track, it has a lot of emotion and feelings going on with it — and that’s how I remember that whole late ‘90s US vibe. when I listened to it way back then and still to this day with tracks that stand the test of time so hopefully what I have done here will do just that.
Is there one machine, program or technique that characterizes your sound?
As my productions are mainly digital based it has got to obviously be a plugin for me. I am a massive fan of the Modular V Plugin as I can find pretty much every sound I am looking for in there for my style with the obvious tweaks to get it to the sound I eventually want.
What is the one piece of kit that you simply cannot do without?
Ooh seeing as you asked I supposed it would have to be my trusty old tipple of Vecchio Romagna as it gives me plenty of inspiration… :-) (insert photo of bottle of drink here) On a serious note The Korg M1 & Wave Station and Predator are the main plugins I use for my sounds too, Plus for my beats I mainly use the Geist drum machine to make my own grooves and then I usually jump on the Stylus remix to fill them little gaps where there is always that something missing.
Any advice for your fans on how to make it in today’s fast paced game?
You just got to keep doing what you do and don’t give up on something that you love, find your own sound and style. I was once given some sound advice from a respected artist and he said to me to try and be experimental in what you do and don’t be afraid to step away from the norm — just jam and hit record and things will come out the way you want eventually. Keep sending your music to labels and don’t be put off by not getting a response, as sooner or later a you will find a home for your sound which I think I have.
