Celebrating 5 Years with Berlin based duo: Kyodai

Over the past five years, elusive Berlin production duo Kyodai have gained support from some of the most respected players in the game, from Laurent Garnier and Masters At Work to Jimpster and Gilles Peterson. We caught up with the guys to celebrate their milestone…

Thanks for chatting to us guys! 5 years as Kyodai is quite a milestone! Are you bored of each other yet?

It’s a pleasure! hahah that’s a good question, not yet… After working in music for 20 years now, we could be bored but we complement each other very well and we do a good team together. We haven’t lost the magic in the studio so that makes us very happy and excited in every project.

Hopefully we’ll get to have another chat with you at the 10 year mark! Tell us some of your career highlights from the last 5 years?

If we have to highlight some Gigs maybe Worldwide Awards at Koko London – WorldwideFestival Sete, SouthportWeekender (last Edition), Eureka Parties at Vent and Air ClubTokyo were great but also D-edge Sao Paulo, we always play in Paris or Berlin, Panorama bar and Watergate are always very special to us.
Regarding releases, it was very nice to be part of GTA V soundtrack with our track “Breaking”, also we got a lot of popularity with our collaboration with Stee Downes with “Music Rises up” and talking about remixes “Still in Love” for Shuya Okino with a very exclusive 100 vinyl release was a Highlight as well.

What are the benefits of producing as a duo, are two heads really better than one?

The benefits are 50% less that if you get the royalties alone hahahaha… Ok, of course it’s kind of a different approach since there are 2 heads thinking but, it’s definitely not necessarily better than just one person producing; In the beginning of the creative process, sometimes we go our separate ways so later we can put it together and sometimes all the things flow together very quickly, of course in the end the result may be more wide though.

How would you say your sound has progressed over the years?

Not much, we are always trying to not repeat the same formula and we do whatever we are feeling at the moment, sometimes more electronic and sometimes more jazzy but in essence it’s quite similar, that’s what we tried in our latest Release “Amazonia” on Vida records. to put all of these together, playing piano jazz chords, rolling electronic structure, latin percussion, big synth accompanying etc… That’s what keeps the same spirit from our first release “Mi Rumba” but with more elements that we developed in our others releases.

You guys have had the chance to release on some really cool labels over the last 5 years, Vida Records, Local Talk, Exploited etc. Are there are particular labels you’d like to release on or artists you’d love to collaborate with in the future? What’s next for Kyodai?

Yes! we are very proud of all the labels who trusted us for releasing these 5 years and we already have in mind to continue with them, our next original release is already finished and is gonna be on Exploited at the beginning of March, also we are finishing some EP for very nice labels that we’ve never release on so far, and of course several remixes that we are recording right now.
