Catching up with Baltimore based duo Life on Planets

DJ Magazine have hailed them as “perhaps the most interesting project to drop to date through New York community Wolf + Lamb.” – Quite an impressive accolade for Life On Planets! Following on from the likes of Nicolas Jaar and PillowTalk, Baltimore group Life On Planets have set the stage for what’s sure to be an exciting year. They kick off 2017 with a deep and emotional new EP on Better On Foot ‘Akasha’, we caught up with the guys to celebrate their new release.

Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to chat to us! Where are you in the world right now and what are you up to?

Hey Traxsource! And hello to the seekers. We’re back in our homestate Maryland, gathering ideas, collecting inspiration and both reveling in the spirit of the people yet reeling at the horrors of the new President…

You seem to be quite tight with the Wolf + Lamb guys, how did that come about?

It was all thanks to Tanner Ross and a couple odd nights spent at the old Marcy Hotel. There’s a real brotherly vibe, and something of the wanderer in each of our labelmates that we took a liking to.

DJ Magazine actually hailed you as “perhaps the most interesting project to drop to date through the New York community Wolf + Lamb”. That’s a pretty nice accolade! How would you describe your sound, who or what are your main influences?

We have a very eclectic sound…and approach our music more like activists than composers. It is important for our songs to leave the listener with a message; be it a simple mood or a grand statement. We seek to promote love, peace, health and understanding. Thematically, we look at various higher ideals ranging from the ethereal to the occult: Zen Buddhism, the writings of Aldous Huxley and Philip K Dick, astrology and tarot. Musically, we draw from just about everything, including bossa nova, soul, gypsy jazz, funk, and math rock. It’s a different formula, attempting to make people dance while also telling a story.

Talk to us about your upcoming release on Better on Foot..

The akashic record is a theorized ethereal library where one can view different human experiences.
The Akasha EP is about a realization that by sharing our experiences we can help one another move forward and advance. Sometimes great songs are a catalyst for movement, such as ‘Whats Going On’ or ‘Move on Up’. When people share their dreams, like Martin Luther King Jr, they help others see the light, better futures and brighter days. Some view the spiritual experience as one that should be private and relegated to avenues of asceticism; however when we invite others in to understand our beliefs, we can open their eyes or open conversations that can help us leap frog ahead to an understanding of a bigger picture.

We absolutely loved your remix of ‘Whatever’ on Wolf & Lamb Recordings, are we going to be seeing you return to W+L in the future?

There may be some happy surprises for followers of Wolf & Lamb this year….thats all we’ll say, lips are sealed.

tell us something about yourselves that everyone knows and something no-one knows..

We’re Life on Planets, from the cultural mecca known as Baltimore…people who think it’s a dangerous place have only seen The Wire. We live among artists and activists, working together to improve the human condition from our warehouses and mural laden streets. – join our Sangha
