Label Spotlight #017 - Suol Music
Fritz Kalkbrenner, Till Von Sein, Chopstick & Johnjon, Larse, Meggy, Tender Games & Yannick Labbé.. If you’re familiar with this roster then you’ll already know who we’ve selected for our label spotlight this week. We had the pleasure to chat with Chopstick & Johnjon who are the heads of this independent Berlin-based record label, dominating the Deeper side of the House scene, Suol is a musical community that focuses on developing and nurturing a collective of talented artists and pushing out an output of Deep, emotive House records that never compromises on quality. We welcome Suol into the hall of fame this week!
Hey, thanks for taking the time to chat to us! As you know we’re massive fans of the label! Could you please give us a little bit of background on you and the label? What were / still are your influences?
Our main reasons to start Suol were 1) to build a musical home for likeminded people and 2) to give artists who we like and appreciate the necessary freedom to develop. We didn’t really have a blueprint when we started, we had our own ideas and were just curious to see if they would work, if we could find fans who appreciate the same things about music as we do.
What do you look for when signing a record for Suol? Any tips for budding producers looking to get signed to the label?
We don’t sign records, we only sign artists. If you work with someone for a long period, only then can you share long term goals and really invest in the development of the artist. This is one of the main reasons we started the label. So what we look for in a potential signing are originality, authenticity, the will to develop and put in the necessary work and, of course, the same wavelength. If you’re going to work with an artist for the foreseeable future, you’ll need to vibe, you’ll need to be able to talk, you’ll need to respect each other and stay open minded. That’s why we always meet artists face to face before we decide on working together. If the chemistry wasn’t right, we’d never get together, no matter the talent.
What have been your favourite releases from the label over the years?
Are you kidding me? It’s like deciding which one of your kids is your favourite!
If you could have signed any record in the world for the label, what would it have been and why?
We still rue the day when Eiffel 65 sent us the demo of “Blue (Da Ba Dee)“ and we turned it down because it wasn’t commercial enough. So gutted. :(
Could you tell us a bit about what’s coming up for Suol?
We have just released Till Von Sein’s brilliant “Forever” EP which is still going strong. A new compilation series in form of a review, focussing on one Suol artist’s creative output at a time, is coming up next. Chopstick & Johnjon will be reviewed first. After that we have Larse and Tender Games coming up with dope music, before it’s time for our summertime gem again, our annual Summer Daze compilation which features exclusive and previously unreleased music by the Suol family and friends.
As we are very dedicated when it comes to our label events, we’re excited about two upcoming open airs in Berlin. Besides these we’re working on the next Label Nights in Berlin. We have big plans but we can’t spoil the surprises now. Our recent label night at Prince Charles, where we decorated the club with 2,500 flowers, was a little taste of what’s to come. :) We’re also looking forward to the next few Break Room Facebook Livecasts with some very interesting guest DJs, which of course you will be able to see on the Suol Facebook Page. And of course we’re already working on the next Suol Apparel collection, which are produced in the EU and according to Oeko-Tex standards, as always. The first samples look super tasty.
