Label Spotlight #027 - Cut Rec Promos

This week for our Label Spotlight series, we’re chatting to Mattei & Omich about their Cut Rec promos imprint! Home to the likes of Funkatron and Re-Tide as well as harboring their own productions, the last two years has seen Cut Rec Promos be responsible for putting out some of the funkiest sounds around, and they’re showing no signs of letting up..

Could you give us a little bit of background on you, the label, and what your influences were and still are?

Cut Rec is a parent label of Metropolitan Recordings and it’s an idea of Patrizio Mattei & Daniele Omicciolo (aka Mattei & Omich). It was born in 2014 when Patrizio & Danny (they work for m2o radio, the best dance radio in Italy) met Andrea Prezioso, music selector of Radio Capital (another big radio in Italy with about 1,5 million listeners daily) and “Capital Party”, a special mix on air every Saturday Night at 23 pm with only underground music from the scene of 70’s and 80’s. The two djs were interested in the club culture and in the stories of the Paradise Garage, The Loft, Warehouse, The Gallery… and they made some special episodes (always with Andrea Prezioso) on Larry Levan, Nicky Siano, David Mancuso, Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, Francois Kevorkian and many more. The way to creating a label with re-edits and vintage sounds was short… … and Cut Rec was born :)

What have been your favourite releases from the label over the years?

The last two years on Cut were great! A lot of our productions are going very well, and we are very happy especially for the feedback that we receive from the djs! For us, the main thing is to create a track suitable for the djs and for the clubs. At the club you can hear the tracks and the DJs bring these sounds to the people. For example, the tracks of our artists Re-Tide or Funkatron are perfect for any dancefloor! Tracks like “The Break Is A Delight”,“Take Me Back To The Underground” or “Revolution Is Here” by Re-Tide or “Disco Sensation” by Funkatron. We also have a great collaboration with the Change’s management: in 2015 we released a official remix of the hit “The Glow Of Love”

Tell us a bit about what’s coming up for the label

A special mention should be made of this point: many DJs from around the world now are interested in the label and we are very happy for this. We are very pleased to work with the artist Moon Rocket, talented musician and DJ based in NYC. Soon there will be many releases from this collaboration and many funky surprises :)

If you could have signed any record in the world for the label, what would it have been and why?

Good Times by Chic! We think that this song has literally changed the history.

What do you look for when signing a record for Cut Rec? Any tips for budding producers looking to get signed to the label?

We make a lot of re-edits and we use a lot of samples… but in our productions there is always a soul, a mood… our advice is to work on the sample and give it your own originality with a groove, with a voice… It’s not easy but these things make the difference, always :)
